Did you know - Tips about Chinese Culture

TEN INTERESTING INSIGHTS

CHINESE CULTURE

1. The collective interest is more important than individual interest.

2. Respect the hierarchical social order - authorities, the elderly, parents and people
of ranking.

3. Let people "save face" (mian zi) and never cause someone to "lose face."

4. Establishing good relationships or connections (guanxi) can go a long way.
Make friends first, do business later.

5. A person who "hears one and understands ten" is regarded as an intelligent communicator.

6. Patience is a good virtue. "With time and patience the leaf of the mulberry becomes satin" (Chinese proverb). Making things happen takes time, often longer than you want. But in the end it may pay off.

7. If you present a business card to a Chinese, make sure it is printed in both Chinese & English. Chinese in the PRC use simplified characters while in Taiwan traditional characters are used.

8. Chinese are hard bargainers. Get used to the bargaining process in some business settings and personal shopping trips.

9. Learn to "wine and dine the Chinese way" – cheers ("gan bei") doesn't mean that you have to follow "bottoms up." Try to keep an open mind regarding food – some of the "strangest" foods are considered delicacies and might even be good for you!

10. Do not give a Chinese a clock as a gift, items in sets of four, and never give a Chinese man a green-colored hat.
