Etiquette when Visiting a Japanese Shrine:
Bow when entering the shrine's torii gate - this shows respect.
The temizuya at the shrine's entrance is a place to purify the body before entering, by washing hands and mouth.
Praying at the shrine is called "sampai". Begin by putting coins for offering in the box. Ring into the offertory box. Ringing the bell is to attract the gods' attention. Bow twice, clap hands twice, bow again twice to end the "sampai" ritual. |
