Understanding Japanese etiquette and protocol - a Japanese tatami room Why are protocols such an important part of Japanese business culture?

Japanese Etiquette & Protocol

"You never get a second chance to make a first impression." ~ Will Rogers

Japanese etiquette & protocol is highly influenced by its long history which has cultivated a highly structured and hierarchical society. Tradition has been a key factor in forming the highly successful modern-day Japan.

These protocols govern all aspects of Japanese life and interpersonal relationships. Great importance is placed on harmony, politeness, loyalty, group consideration.

Etiquette when Visiting a Japanese Shrine:
Bow when entering the shrine's torii gate - this shows respect.

The temizuya at the shrine's entrance is a place to purify the body before entering, by washing hands and mouth.

Praying at the shrine is called "sampai". Begin by putting coins for offering in the box. Ring into the offertory box. Ringing the bell is to attract the gods' attention. Bow twice, clap hands twice, bow again twice to end the "sampai" ritual.

Working Effectively with Japanese workshops will include a section on etiquette and protocol. While the Japanese are very gracious and do not exect non-Japanese to understand the intracacies of Japanese custom and traditions, a solid understanding of proper behavior is essential. In Japan, the exression "you never get a second chance to make a good impression" takes on new meaning.
